  • What is the difference between Vegan, Vegetarian and WFPB lifestyles?
Vegan Diet: Excludes all animal-derived products. Focus: Ethical, environmental, and health reasons. Lifestyle: Often extends beyond diet, avoiding items like leather and products tested on animals. There is also the Junk-food Vegan who rely on vegan burgers, fries, vegan ice creams, and other veganized versions of popular non-vegan foods. Vegetarian Diet: No meat, but may include dairy, eggs, or both. Focus: Health, religion, ethics, or personal preference. Lifestyle: Primarily a dietary choice. Whole Food Plant-Based (WFPB) Diet: Prioritizes whole or minimally processed plants; minimal or no animal products. Focus: Health benefits from whole plant foods. Lifestyle: Mainly dietary for health, without broader ethical considerations of veganism.
  • Will I get enough protein on a WFPB diet?
Absolutely! Many plant foods, such as beans, lentils, and whole grains, are excellent protein sources.
  • How can I get enough calcium without dairy?
Leafy greens, fortified plant-based milks, almonds, and chia seeds are great calcium sources.
  • Isn't fat necessary for health? Why remove oil?
While fats are essential, whole food sources like avocados, nuts, and seeds provide necessary fats without processed oils.
  • What is a WFPB SOS free diet?
A diet focused on whole plant foods without added Salt, Oil, or Sugar. While we aim for no added S.O.S for optimal health benefits, I know it’s not always realistic! So let’s aim for as little as possible!
  • How do I start transitioning to a WFPB SOS free diet?
Begin by incorporating more whole plant foods and gradually phase out processed foods and animal products.
  • Why should I consider removing salt, oil, and sugar from my diet?
These can contribute to various health issues, including heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.
  • How can I flavor my food without salt?
Try herbs, spices, lemon juice, and vinegar for natural and flavorful alternatives.
  • Will I get enough Omega-3s without fish in my diet?
Flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts are excellent plant-based Omega-3 sources.
  • Aren't whole grains bad for you because of carbs?
Whole grains are nutrient-dense and provide sustained energy. It's refined grains and sugars that are often problematic.
  • How will my energy levels be affected on a WFPB diet?
Many people experience more stable and increased energy levels due to consistent nutrient intake.
  • How can I make sure I'm getting all essential nutrients?
A varied WFPB diet typically provides essential nutrients. The magic number is 31 different types of WFPB foods/week. Eat the rainbow and more!
  • What can I use instead of oil for cooking?
Try vegetable broth, water, or silicone baking mats for oil-free cooking.
  • Can I eat out while maintaining a WFPB SOS free diet?
Yes, though choices might be limited. Opt for salads, steamed vegetables, and ask for SOS free preparations. But if you decide to transition your lifestyle with me, you will see that my 90% - 10% approach makes it easier to enjoy social situations. I know it’s not always possible to stick with it 100% and I am a believer in still enjoying life while maintaining good health!
  • Will a WFPB diet help with weight loss?
Many people find weight loss easier on a WFPB diet due to reduced calorie-dense foods and increased fiber, without ever feeling hungry!
  • How does the WFPB diet impact blood sugar and diabetes?
A WFPB diet can help stabilize blood sugar levels and is often recommended for type 2 diabetes management.
  • Do I need supplements on a WFPB diet?
Vitamin B12 is the only supplement you have to take if you eat a variety of WFPB foods. Vitamin D might be necessary if you don’t have much exposure to sun, the same applies to people eating a standard diet. Omega-3 might be needed if you do not follow my recommended guidelines. Take a look at my blog if you would like more information on the subject!
  • Is the WFPB diet more expensive than a regular diet?
While some specialty items might be pricey, such as junk-food vegan foods which try to replicate common foods, staples like beans, rice, and seasonal veggies are often budget-friendly. For fun, let’s compare current protein prices in USD $ at HEB in Texas. Lean ground beef: $6.73/lb Boneless, skinless chicken breast: $5.40/lb Beyond meat (Plant based): $5.50/lb Dry black beans (which expands to 2.5 lbs!): $1.85/lb Canned black beans: $0.85/lb 1 lbs of tofu: $2.81/lb As you can see, eating a healthy Plant Based diet can be quite economical!
